Once the production shortages stop and all three systems are at MSRP, the PS3 is going to look extremely idiotic with a price tag $200 higher than the 360 and twice the price of the Wii.

I'm not banking on the 360 winning this round only because Japan is ridiculously xenophobic, and consequently isn't going to hand them developer support on a silver platter. They have Capcom though, and the PS2's big hit (GTA3) was from an American developer, so things may be different this round.

It's hard to tell what will happen with the Wii at this stage. Nintendo doesn't appear to have diverted any of their investment in the kiddie games that are ruining their image, but I'm banking them coming out on top just because Sony screwed up so badly.

And of course, historically, the side with Squaresoft has always won. But now Square is neutral, so who knows!

To rag more on the OP, to say that "Nintendo and the Wii are going off on their own thing" and calling it non-next-gen because of that is completely contradictory. Next-gen means innovation, invention, new things, and new experiences. The 360 just banks a little harder on online play and graphcis than the first one did. The PS3 is really an inside joke by Sony, concocted by the designers because the entire world hates Ken Kutaragi.

Seriously though, there wasn't really any change between the microsoft original and its upgrade (because all it is, is an upgrade). Sony tried to implement so many things that it screwed backwards compatibility up the backside, broke its own structure under its huge price tag and weight (component/new-blue-ray-bullshit wise) and we're still waiting to see if it will ever recover. Nintendo actually spent some time to do something new. All the gamecube brought was a really nicely articulated controller (best of the 3, imho, but it could use more buttons, like the ps2's), and CDs instead of cartridges. Now we have the wii-mote, the newly articulated on-line features, total backwards compatibility, and even a DVD version a year from now for Japan.

I'm not even a fanboy. Hell, I don't like most of Nintendo's games. But I'm a crazy supporter of the Wii, just because they dared to do it and did.

Have a good wii-kend, and good luck to those lining up w/o a preorder tomorrow.

Yeah, I have way too much time on my hands on saturdays.

I ordered an xbox 360 today, not just because the games etc look sweet, but also how expensive and unoriginal the ps3 is.

I think this 360 game from Bioware, called Mass Effect looks incredible. Will it make a revolution to RPGs? its also coming to pc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwoAvsCrN_A

and halo 3. completely in game video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXrYSEOg3Ro

and crackdown. it's a game by the original Grand theft auto and lemmings creator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK9owFDrW9M

And Lost Odyssey. The original creator of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi(Final Fantasy 1-10) left square to make his own company(mistwalker). he is making two new RPGs. LO looks incredible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMSL_bM3N7I

And Assassins Creed(also coming to ps3 and pc) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOk5j-iGuTM

I own all 3..just because I can.

Wii - More for kiddies and teens due to it being the cheapest and having classic kids games like Zelda/Mario.

PS3 - Decent piece of kit but for the price I expected better. Need to wait for price to drop so the average people can get hold of one.

Xbox360 - For the true console gamer, great online gameplay and a decent amount of games to play.

360. No Doubt.

Why?
Well, because the PS3 is hardly an improvement over the 360, yet it costs a whopping $600.
Also, the 360 seems to be much better as far as games go... (Gears of War, Halo 3, Dead Rising...)
And of course, the xbox live system was amazing enough with the original xbox.

IMHO 360 > Wii > PS3

I'd get a Wii but since in the OP have stated as either ps3 or 360 so I'll go with the ps3 but I'll delay getting it since there aren't any games that are great enough plus I'm waiting for DMC and MSG games...
btw, the Wii is marketed towards the entire household and not just children and teens.
PS3 is a great system but too hard to develop for as I heard but as least it has something like what the Wii has...but it's called sixaxis...
Xbox 360- is for the hardcore gamers but too many shooters that I would play on the PC, good online structure, and fair amount of games but most are targeted towards adults and hence not family friendly.
oh and forgot but Gears of War looks awesome and I would consider it as a system seller besides Halo.

From what ive heard, PS3 has the equivelant of a 7800 series card in it while the 360 has the equivelant of an x700 or x800 card in it. But, I've also heard that the 360 processor is slightly better. That could just be a bunch of marketing junk too, though. What really matters as far as graphics go is how well the games utilise them, and microsoft tends to do that better.

But, I tend to lean towards sony for the entertainment value of their games.

BTW, is gears of war coming out for PC? That game looks sweet.

I've also heard that the PS3's controller is a piece of shit :-S all that crap they tried to shove in it and it didn't work. Then they took it out, and (so says my friend, the weakest person I know) it's the lightest thing he's ever tried to play a game with. No feedback or anything whatsoever. He also says, that even if you don't notice rumble much while you're playing, you sure as hell notice it when it's gone.

They probably dumped it because they getting sued for patent infringement and losing (and further proving that the USPTO will grant patents for even the most obvious of ideas). Microsoft hit the same problem and settled out of court.

I doubt it'll be missed, most people I know just turn it off because it's annoying.

Sony themselves hardly make anything, the big hits of the PS2 were mostly separate developers, or studios that were independent to begin with (i.e. Naughty Dog, Incognito). Only big hit game developed by an actual Sony-branded studio I can think of is God of War. Which, despite being indescribably awesome, is just one game.

It only takes one game to make a system though. Let us remember Xbox - which was really just "HaloBox" because Halo (and number 2) was really the only exclusive-to-Xbox title popular enough to move systems off the shelves.

Too early for me to say either way in the race though, Sony is in a position to change some things that would impact the race next quarter.

Wii, though seperate and doomed from the big races just for being Nintendo, will probably be the most fun >_> Gamecube was SOOOO underrated, which I didnt mind because that made it cheap

If I couldn't get a Wii and had to choose between 360 and PS3 I would go with the 360. Plenty of great games, amazing online features, and costs much less.

Yeah... and the PS3 is also suffering from huge recalls due to a super-ultra-reenactment of the "red light of death" era from the 360 launch days. Hah.

It only takes one to make a system VIABLE, it takes more than that to win though. The PS2 didn't win by having one good game, it won by having MGS2 first, GTA3 first, and starting strong with stuff like Devil May Cry and Twisted Metal Black. They also expanded on the Greatest Hits program which helped make the system more appealing to people on a budget.

Splinter Cell also played a pivotal role in its success. Don't overlook the importance of Xbox Live either, there's a lot to be said for being the first console with a real online strategy.

If you want an even riskier call, I don't think Halo 3 is even going to be the 360's biggest hit. Halo 2 wasn't the groundbreaker that the original was (and wasn't even reviewed as well), and there's not really reason to believe Halo 3 will be either just because it looks pretty. Final Fantasy VII sold the PS1, but Final Fantasy X didn't sell the PS2, GTA3 did.

If Nintendo opens up developer relations some more, and stop preaching to the choir by making nothing but franchise games for existing Nintendo fanboys, then they can win this round. Although it really doesn't matter if they do or not, because Nintendo is making considerable money on even the hardware, and are going to make a ton more by selling old SNES games.

The 360 may win for several reasons. First, they have THE best online strategy, period. Second, they have capitalized well on their launch, so far they have two big hits, one just in time for the holiday season. This gives them more chance to come out with a BIG hit before either of the other systems do. Third, opening up XNA (as mentioned earlier) has too much potential to NOT produce a hit. However, I still think Japan's xenophobia will ultimately kick it out of the #1 spot, again.

The PS3 may have some great games, but the problem is it is going to need several exceptional ones to justify paying $200 over either of the other systems. The 360 has a head start on selection, and the PS3 is at a severe disadvantage if a big hit winds up as a multiplatform release.

EDIT -- Oh yeah, hardware comparisons between the PS3 and 360 are a non-issue. Hardware is never an issue unless it's crippling, like the Gamecube and N64's lack of storage capacity. However, pretty much every PC game can fit on a DVD, so there's no obvious reason the 360 should run into any, and if it does, there's no obvious reason a 2-DVD game wouldn't work. Beyond that, both have more than enough performance to be leveraged for quite some time down the road.

The PS2 was, hardware-wise, terrible. The PS1 was, hardware-wise, EXTREMELY terrible. The PS1 wasn't even a true 3D system, it drew polygons in 2D with no depth, which is why you get texture warping on polygons which extend into the distance (watch the road in any racing game as it approaches the camera!).

Yet both won their respective rounds in spite of their inferiority. The PS1's success can be largely attributed to the rise of FMVs and the N64 choking on storage capacity, but the N64 hardware had more than enough potential to pump out games that the PSX was simply incapable of. The PS2 could make no such claim, and ultimately prove that superior games beat superior hardware.

Ironically, the PS1 vs. Saturn (and the PSP's failure, ironically!) also prove that superior price beats superior hardware, and the Saturn was killed by the PS1's low launch price, a lesson they seem to have forgotten in their latest crusade to push another stupid proprietary format.
